{"id":2275,"date":"2019-03-08T07:00:08","date_gmt":"2019-03-08T12:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/langa.com\/?p=2275"},"modified":"2019-03-07T14:28:21","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T19:28:21","slug":"a-reader-asks-can-i-close-the-top-on-my-laptop-while-it-is-updating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/langa.com\/index.php\/2019\/03\/08\/a-reader-asks-can-i-close-the-top-on-my-laptop-while-it-is-updating\/","title":{"rendered":"A reader asks: &#8220;Can I close the top on my laptop while it is updating?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Closing the lid on a furiously-churning PC is kind of asking for trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on how your laptop\/notebook is set up, closing the lid might put the system into <em><strong>sleep\/suspend<\/strong><\/em> mode; or <em><strong>hybrid sleep<\/strong><\/em> mode; or <strong><em>hibernation<\/em><\/strong>; or could invoke <em><strong>full power-off<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If closing the lid kills power to the PC, you could end up with a scrambled operating system and an unbootable PC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your system is set up to suspend\/hibernate, closing the lid during mid-update <em><u>should<\/u><\/em> preserve the system&#8217;s halfway-updated state, and let you resume later.
