You’ll need a cable lock<\/strong> and either an adhesive anchor<\/strong> or a cable long enough to lasso<\/strong> itself after passing around or through an immovable object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A PC cable lock<\/strong> (examples<\/a>) attaches to a security point built into most laptop bodies; the attachment point is connected to the laptop’s frame, so it can’t be removed without damaging the laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most laptop anchors do require screws, but some use industrial-strength adhesive<\/strong> (examples<\/a>); or you can specify long lengths of cable<\/strong> that you can loop it around or through a nearby immovable object (a pipe, a structural column, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But note: Any cable lock can be defeated with wire cutters. A good lock will slow down a snatch-and-grab thief, but cannot not stop a determined thief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your laptop (or other device) is at high risk for theft, use a lock for sure; but also use good onboard security (e.g. encryption) to protect your data even if the device is stolen; and buy insurance to fund a replacement unit, should the worst happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
