Q. Why don’t the Great Lakes have tides?<\/strong> (via Quora)<\/small><\/p>\n

A. They do!<\/strong> All bodies of water have tides — even your bathtub! Even your coffee cup!<\/p>\n

But here’s the catch: You need an ocean-sized amount of water for the cumulative effect of tides to be easily visible.<\/p>\n

In fact, the very largest tides on the Great Lakes only change the water level by about five centimeters, or less than 2″; an amount easily masked by other effects such as wind and rainfall. (Source<\/a>)<\/p>\n

So, the tides are there, but are too small to notice.<\/p>\n
