Q: “If you live in Boston, can you use your Massachusetts E-ZPass in other states?” (via Quora)
A: In some states, yes. (See map)
Here’s the thing: “E-ZPass” is a brand name for one specific type of electronic transponder system. It’s neither universal nor generic. There are many other, incompatible brands of electronic tolling systems; each State or locale gets to choose which brand it will use in its area.
This E-ZPass map shows that the E-ZPass system itself is mostly a northeastern US thing. An E-ZPass will work in any state colored purple.
Elsewhere, nope. Florida, for example, has its own electronic tolling called SunPass. An E-ZPass transponder will not work in Florida; a SunPass transponder won’t work on E-ZPass.
So: Remember that E-ZPass is just a brand name for one kind of electronic tolling. Places where it’s OK to use E-ZPass will be clearly marked with the E-ZPass logo. If there’s no E-ZPass logo, you can’t use E-ZPass.
