Q: How do I prevent auto connection to unknown Wi-Fi networks on Windows 10 Pro? I already tried everything, what do I do? (via Quora)
A: There’s a very easy fix!
But the thing here is that it’s an unknown network. Windows shouldn’t be auto-connecting to truly unknown networks that you’ve never connected to before; so something’s messed up or broken, or maybe an old maybe-forgotten manual setting is in the way.
The fast, certain, solution is to give your wi-fi setup a clean slate. It only takes a minute (literally!), and gives you a fresh start with nothing — not even forgotten, hidden, or mangled settings — carried over from your existing setup.
It’s easy:
● Open Device Manager (e.g. type or say Device Manager in the Cortana/Search box).
● Scroll down to and expand the entries under Network Adapters.
● Right-click on the first Wi-Fi adapter listed, select Uninstall device. (Don’t worry; it’s only a software setting; nothing’s really being uninstalled.)
● Repeat until all network adapters have been “uninstalled.”
● Ideally, now reboot. If you can’t reboot, open Device Manager’s Action menu and select Scan for Hardware Changes.
● Windows should now rediscover your wi-fi adapter(s), as if for the first time, and set them up afresh, with all benign, default settings. Nothing should be carried over from your current, malfunctioning setup.
● Your Wi-Fi should no longer auto-connect to anything; pick the network(s) you actually do want to connect to, enter their passcode/key
You’re done!
