A reader asks: You still ride motorcycles?

Reader Geoff Komeya asks (via the Contact link):

Hi Fred: Just wanted to ask whether you still ride motorcycles? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read and re-read your blog about your 10,000-mile ride on the ADVrider site. Such a great piece of travel writing. Thanks, Geoff Komeya

Thanks for the kind words, Goeff! Man, it’d been years since I last looked at the write-up about that 10,000 Mile Ride Around North America. Some great memories there, living out of my saddlebags for a month. 🙂

The purple line shows the route of my month-long, 10,000mi/16,000km motorcycle ride across the US from New Hampshire, then back across Canada. Spectacular!

Alas, some of the picture/video links have died as various picture-hosting sites have gone away. Sigh. Maybe that can be a winter project this year — resurrecting the old photos. I still have the originals filed away. Hmmm.

But in answer to you question, no, I don’t ride motorcycles anymore. I live in a densely urban area now with tons of traffic; a heavy touring bike like my old Goldwing is exactly wrong for this environment. (I donated my ‘Wing to my local NPR station several years ago.)

I still get around on two wheels, but it’s now mostly via an e-bike — a pedal bike that has an as-needed electric-assist. Info here: https://langa.com/index.php/2018/09/03/a-reader-asks-what-e-bike-do-you-have/.

Thanks for writing!
