A reader asks: “Can I close the top on my laptop while it is updating?”

Closing the lid on a furiously-churning PC is kind of asking for trouble.

Depending on how your laptop/notebook is set up, closing the lid might put the system into sleep/suspend mode; or hybrid sleep mode; or hibernation; or could invoke full power-off.

If closing the lid kills power to the PC, you could end up with a scrambled operating system and an unbootable PC.

If your system is set up to suspend/hibernate, closing the lid during mid-update should preserve the system’s halfway-updated state, and let you resume later. But it’s risky because some Updates involve wholesale replacement of operating system components, and trying to do a suspend/resume while the OS itself is being worked on is (ahem) far from ideal.

So, if you have a choice, don’t interrupt an update.

If you don’t have a choice, and some emergency requires that you bail out in mid-update right now, try to use your PC’s hibernation mode to give your PC the best-possible shot of a safe outcome.

  1. To take the question at face value: if you set the lid in Power Options to “Do nothing”, you could close it if you just want to stop your cat from chasing its reflection, or stop your parrot from pecking at the screen (don’t laugh; I’ve seen it happen).
