“Is 8GB enough RAM memory for a new laptop in 2019?”

(Answer requested by Ellie Williams)

Yes, for ordinary use — office tasks, browsing, streaming media, etc. — 8GB is fine for a current-generation 64-bit PC.

If you have occasional heavy use that bogs down an 8GB PC, or if you want to build in a little future-proofing, go for 12GB.

If you edit hi-res videos, play elaborate games, are into VR, are a developer, or have similar, nonstandard needs; or if you anticipate doing things like that within the reasonable lifetime of your hardware; then you might want more RAM — 16GB, 32GB, or even more, might make sense in those unusual cases. But you’d already know that, if you were in, or about to be in, those categories. 🙂

So: The sweet spot for current 64-bit PCs in normal use is 8-12GB. Once you have that much RAM, look to other improvements, such as an SSD, or better graphics, etc.
