“I need to purchase an external DVD/CD drive for a new laptop. Should it be the same brand as the laptop?”

(Answer requested by Dawn Hassell)

For most PCs, it doesn’t matter. Most external drives for PCs use standard USB connections, and will work with any PC that also uses standard USB connections. USB cables are inexpensive: a 3′ cable typically costs under $10.

If the PC uses proprietary connectors — I’m looking at you, Apple — then you’ll either have to buy the same brand, or use an adapter. For example, Apple sells a 3′ Lightning-to-USB adapter cable for about $20 at the Apple store.
