“I need to leave my new laptop in my car in 100F+ degree heat during my roadtrip. How can I protect it?”

If the product is well-designed, it will be built to withstand normal shipping temperatures while off: Think of a cargo container full of PCs baking for days in the sun on the deck of a ship transiting the tropics; or deep-chilling for hours in an airliner’s cargo hold; etc.

That doesn’t meant your laptop is invulnerable or that you should seek out temperature extremes, but it probably does mean that the PC will be fine inside your car as long as you take a few basic precautions.

Laptops, like most electronic devices, are much more sensitive to temperature extremes when they’re on and in use than when they’re off and inert.

When you need to leave the laptop in the hot car, turn the laptop off, park the car in as cool a spot as is available (e.g. if possible, under a shade tree or awning or in a garage). In any case, place the laptop out of sight and out of direct sunlight (maybe under a seat?), and leave one or more car windows open a crack. If you’re in a reliably sunny location, you might invest in one of those folding sun screens for windshields (many examples); they can help keep your car closer to ambient temperatures instead of reaching solar-oven-like temps.

As soon as you can, get the still-turned-off laptop out of the high heat and into a well-ventilated spot. Leave it alone (and off) until it’s completely back to normal ambient temperature. (Remember that the guts and battery of the laptop may retain heat after the exterior has cooled. In fact, if your laptop is one of the dying breed that has a removeable battery, taking the battery out and letting it cool separately from the laptop can speed the overall cool-down process.)

Once everything’s back to normal temperatures, odds are your laptop will run just fine!
