“Why would a new Seagate Barracuda 2 TB HDD not power on?”

(Answer requested by Dex Jackson)

It’s new? Still under warranty?

First, make sure the problem isn’t something obvious: Plug the drive into different, known-working electrical power outlets; and into different, known-working USB ports. If a different PC is available, try temporarily plugging it into that.

If it doesn’t work with any known-good USB port or power outlet, don’t waste your time looking for a fix! You paid for a fully-working hard drive, and it’s not working. It doesn’t matter why it won’t work. It failed when it shouldn’t have, and that’s that.

File a warranty claim; return the defective drive, and demand a fully-working replacement.

A rule of thumb: If an important piece of tech has serious problems (like: won’t power on!) during its warranty period, don’t mess around with it: Return it for repair or replacement.

Electronic defects don’t go away or get better with use. Use your warranty!
