“I’m a producer on my way to college. How can I secure my laptop so it doesn’t get stolen, without screwing holes into my desk?”

(Answer requested by Dennis Willis)

You’ll need a cable lock and either an adhesive anchor or a cable long enough to lasso itself after passing around or through an immovable object.

A PC cable lock (examples) attaches to a security point built into most laptop bodies; the attachment point is connected to the laptop’s frame, so it can’t be removed without damaging the laptop.

Most laptop anchors do require screws, but some use industrial-strength adhesive (examples); or you can specify long lengths of cable that you can loop it around or through a nearby immovable object (a pipe, a structural column, etc.).

But note: Any cable lock can be defeated with wire cutters. A good lock will slow down a snatch-and-grab thief, but cannot not stop a determined thief.

If your laptop (or other device) is at high risk for theft, use a lock for sure; but also use good onboard security (e.g. encryption) to protect your data even if the device is stolen; and buy insurance to fund a replacement unit, should the worst happen.
