A reader asks: “Is 32 GB RAM too much?”

For what?

For ordinary use — office tasks, browsing, streaming media — in a current-generation 64-bit PC, 8GB is fine, 12 is ample.

If you edit hi-res videos, play elaborate games, are into VR, or are a developer, you might want more RAM. But you’d already know that, if you were in those categories.

Even if you’re thinking of “buying ahead” to future-proof your current PC, it’s still hard for me to imagine any app that would routinely require 32GB of RAM, within the likely lifetime of any PC you could buy today. The hardware would likely be worn out or obsolete by the time such apps became common!

So: You probably won’t see any real benefit from having that much RAM in a general-purpose PC. Spend your money on a better SSD, or better graphics, instead.
