USA Today related article https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2019/01/08/milky-way-galaxy-hit-galaxy-spectacular-collision-2-billion-years/2512569002/ did qualify it actually meant “out of the Milky Way and into intergalactic space”.

Yes, the actual article was fine. The snip I included was a teaser ad that USAToday was running somewhere — I don’t remember where. Newser, maybe? Anyway, the copyeditor for that snip turned the headline into nonsense; hence the humor.
