Boston, from Deer Island

With the end of this year’s stint as a herring migration monitor (numbers yet to come), I had a free morning this week. It was summerlike, so I slathered on the sunblock and pedaled to Deer Island, in Boston harbor.

Part of the Harborwalk rings the island. I hadn’t been there in a year, but the views were as good as I remembered.

From the seaward side, there are views of the other islands, all the local lighthouses, the ship and boat traffic, and the Atlantic.

From the landward side, there are some excellent views of Boston.

Boston, in a *very* wide angle view from Deer Island.
The small monument is to A. David Mazzone, the Federal judge who mandated the cleanup of Boston Harbor. The inscription is from his ruling: “The law secures to the people the right to a clean harbor.”
A mostly flat 24m/39km urban ride.
