For any “should I add more RAM?” questions, regardless of the amount, let Windows’ Task Manager be your guide.
- Open Task Manager (info), select More Details, and then open the Performance tab. Position the Task Manager window so it’s out of the way, but visible.
- Use your PC normally for several days, and watch the Memory graph.
The graph will fluctuate a lot, but if it mostly looks something like this…
… you don’t need more RAM.
But if it routinely looks something like this…
… then yes, you might be able to productively use additional RAM.
I have a 32GB system (the above graphs are from my own PC), and although I can still max out the RAM once or twice a month in routine use, that’s an unusual circumstance related to a few specific tasks that most people never encounter. Most of the time my Memory graph looks like the first one; meaning that adding more RAM mostly wouldn’t help me.
Unless you’re also doing nonstandard stuff with your PC, odds are you won’t see a lot of benefit from adding RAM above 32GB — that’s a lot of RAM! But you don’t have to guess: Task Manager can tell you for certain.
