Puzzling browser (mis)behavior

AskWoody subscriber Ron Kaplan wants to know why a favorite news site is virtually unusable.

  • “Fred: I’m unable to scroll when viewing the U.S. edition of The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/us). A few weeks ago, it became impossible to scroll down the site’s webpages. A scrollbar appears when I open the page, but it then disappears after one or two seconds. This makes the site useless.

“Firefox is my default browser, but this is also a problem with Chrome. Internet Explorer 11 scrolls normally.

“I’ve written to The Guardian about this, but so far they’ve been unable to help. Can you suggest anything that might fix this problem? My PC is running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.”

Check out the solution in my column in this week’s AskWoody plus.

  1. For odd behavior in a browser (especially if another browser is working correctly), the place to start is clearing cache and cookies.Sometimes the browser can get confused and try to render with content in the cache, when it needs fresh content from the from the server. If you clear the cache, then that forces the browser to download completely new copy. It’s not necessarily a generic problem with the browser, so much that it is your accumulation of data.

In Firefox, go to Options, then Privacy and Security, and in the History section, click on “Clear History”. Yes, this will clear your browsing history, and cookies (including cookies used for logins, where you’ll need to log in again)
