Say goodbye to Windows’ classic Disk Cleanup Tool

Farewell, Disk Cleanup!

Microsoft has announced that Windows’ classic Disk Cleanup tool — which can strip gigabytes of junk and obsolete files from your system — is being discontinued.

Here’s what’s going away:

The classic Disk Cleanup has reached the end of the line; it won’t be developed any further; and won’t appear in future versions of Windows.

Here’s what’s replacing it: Win10’s new Free up space now setting.

I find it a little harder to get to, but the new “Free up space now” settings performs essentially the same function as the former Disk Cleanup.

Access it via: Settings/System/Storage/Storage Sense (on); then click Free up space now. When the Free up space now page opens, select the type(s) of files you wish to remove, and then click Remove Files.

The “Free up space now” setting seems to performs essentially the same function as the former Disk Cleanup, but as you can see in the two images above (taken on the same system just seconds apart), the two cleanup tools may suggest slightly different amounts of files to scrub: Adjust your selections accordingly.

(Thanks and a tip o’ the hat to reader app103, who suggested a clarification.)

  1. Did you happen to catch which entries, specifically, didn’t match space amounts with each other?

Or could it be that in the bottom screen shot, you don’t have error reporting files checked, while in the top screenshot, you do?

    1. Good eye! The defaults seem to be slightly different, but yes, if you play with the selections, you can achieve the same results — or close enough not to matter! 🙂
