From the inbox: An odd way for a drive to die

After reading “Should you trust a hard drive after a major error?” (2019-02-18 AskWoody Plus), reader Daniel Loyd wrote with a real-life anecdote of a rather usual drive problem he encountered:

“Fred, I had a hard drive that worked great, check disk and several 3rd party tools showed the drive was in great shape no problems or errors. However, after the computer was left ‘on’ for more than 4 hours, I would attempt to wake up and see nothing but the ‘blue screen of death.’

“I took it to a trusted shop and was told that it checked out fine. He asked to let it remain with him for a few more hours and he would do additional checking.

“He called with an explanation that seemed possible. There was probably a connection inside that was cracked or otherwise not connected properly, and when the drive heated up it would error out causing a fatal error.

“I fully agree with your 1st section and go a little further (due to the lower cost), if a hard drive fails replace it NOW, do not wait or pass go first.”

Thanks, Daniel. Sounds like you have a pretty good repair shop there! 🙂

    1. Yes, that can help in some cases, but is tough on the hardware, and so is a last-ditch kind of thing — something to try when all the simpler, safer options have failed. Thanks, Dixon!
